Why upgrading WordPress is so important.

It seems like every other week, WordPress releases a new version of their awesome software. That’s a good thing, unless you run multiple websites using WordPress.

If you’re in that boat, upgrading all of your WordPress sites might be a pain in the butt, but it’s extremely important to do so.

The main reason for these “dot releases” (ie; 2.5.1) are security fixes. Which means that when someone finds a way to “hack” your WordPress installation, the new release fixes that.

What’s that mean? Well, if you’re running a version that’s old, there’s probably a group of people out there that’ve found a security hole in it.   They can gain access to your account, and cause all sorts of problems for you.

For example, if you’re running WordPress 2.3.2, there’s a very simple “hack” that anyone with the power of Google can do, that can give them complete access to your Admin panel.   And well, you know what they do from there, including deleting everything on your blog, that you’ve ever done.

So, be sure to stay up to date. Always update plugins, always update core code. Always.

Back from India

Got back about 6 days ago from my trip to India. I’m home for a bit, then heading off to Phoenix for a few days, for work, again.

India was pretty cool, I have to say.   I got to see lots of really old sites, and took nearly 900 photos during the 10 days I was there. (http://christineandmike.net/trip-to-india-for-work/ if you want to take a gander. I can’t be bothered to re-upload all 400 megs here, too)

Things have settled down nicely at work, thankfully. Our giant merger is almost over, which means less panicking, and less craziness, which I think everyone needs.   It’s great, though, to see how brilliant some of the people you work with are, in times of crisis.

That’s all, for now. I’ve got nothing interesting to say.

8137 Miles From Home

I’m in India, for work. A long long way from home.

Just thought that was interesting, so I’m posting about it. I’ll post some photos from our offices here when I get back. Should be fun.

Response to my previous post

After my previous post on Best Buy’s inability to know anything, I received an e-mail from Robert Stephens.   Who’s that, you wonder?   I thought the same thing.   The e-mail was titled “The Geek Squad”, nothing more, nothing less.

So I opened it, and decided to see if it was someone else who had a negative experience with “The Geek Squad”.   Turns out, Robert Stephens is the guy who founded the squad back in 1994.   Based on my traffic logs, he must have had a Google alert type alarm set up for negative things about his team.   Within 12 hours of posting, I’d already had an email back, completely without solicitation.

My original post was merely a warning that should always be careful when making a purchase.   Not everyone knows everything.   I wasn’t looking to bad mouth the Geek Squad or get any type of freebies out of the deal.

Robert asked me if the 64-bit version was working, or if I wanted him to comp me a copy of the software.   I thanked him, and let him know I was all set, and that I was up and running.

Nice guy.

Coincidentally, I just got my delivery of the 8 gigs of PC-5300 DDR2 that I ordered two days ago, and installed it. 64-bit Vista is now just as fast, if not faster than 32-bit.   I ran the Windows Performance test through Vista, and got the same score (a 5.8).   I’m guessing the PC-6400 I wanted to buy (but was out of stock) would have pushed me up to the 5.9 mark.   Oh well. I’m happy, for now.

T-Minus 9 Days

Wow, the wedding snuck up quickly. It’s only nine days away now. Luckily everything’s done, except for the last meeting with the reception place to give them the remainder of the payment. Not fun, but no big deal.

Lots has happened since my last (barely) update. Let’s see, where to start:

  • Work is almost complete on our newest website, TVSnobs.net (sister site to MovieSnobs.net)
  • Starting to re-code all of the stuff I’d written for ToursOfSalem.com to update it to more of the stuff I know about now.
  • Began working on a website (and almost completed) for Kathy Diamant’s Personal Assistant services
  • Just about done re-doing a website for a friend’s brother’s dry cleaning business out in western Massachusetts.

Lots going on at my day job, too. Our merger with another company is about 80% done with the hard part, which is good. The stress is certainly starting to show itself, though. You can tell the office is different now. Hopefully it’ll go back to normal post-merger. I personally can’t wait for vacation.

Speaking of vacation, I just got off the phone with the Wynn, our reservation is confirmed and we’re ready to go. I can’t wait, I’m going to take a ton of pictures out there this time. Hopefully we can get in on a Grand Canyon tour that we’re looking at, and take a zillion photos there. I’m glad we’ve got a digital camera, I can’t believe it took me so long to buy one.

Oh, other things that we bought, lots! We got our new TV delivered last week, it’s awesome. 40″ Sony Bravia LCD, has the greatest picture ever. So, now that we had a 1080P TV, we had to go buy a Blu-Ray player, since it “won the war”. We already had an HD DVD player, courtesy of Christine’s aunt and uncle, but we decided to splurge and get the Blu-Ray. Instead of buying the regular player, we got the PlayStation 3, which is pretty bad-ass. It’s not as impressive as the XBox 360, but it’s still pretty cool. Blu-Ray looks amazing on the new TV. So does the XBox, for that matter. Halo and Rock Band in 1080P is pretty impressive.

Got all that new stuff just in time for the video game afternoon that will be my bachelor party, with Christine’s younger brothers. Should be a good time, week from tomorrow. Can’t wait!

I think that’s all, for now. More updates coming once life has stabalized, or I have more to say.

Time flies

Man, times really flies.   I can’t believe it’s been almost 2 months since I updated this thing.

Lots going on, wedding stuff, MovieSnobs, stuff, work stuff.   Too much to detail.   I’m still alive though, I assure you.

Update on things

It’s been a few weeks. Things have been crazy. We’ve got this ginormous merger happening at work, and it’s finally “started”, so I’ve been occupied all day, every day.

Quick update on me, in case anyone cares:

  • MovieSnobs set a new unique visitor record last month, for us. Which was double the month before.
  • Started getting work done on some new projects.
  • Wrote a project management application, similar to one we use at my day job.
  • 105 days until the wedding, I can’t believe how fast it’s approaching.

That’s it. I’m really not all that interesting, but felt compelled to post something, so the site changed. Will have some more “tech” type posts coming up shortly.
